Old Smoothie is No More – Earthquake Breaks Up The Baron Spire

2020 Is proving to be a tough year for climbing in Idaho. The advent of COVID-19 virus pandemic shut down all kinds of travel and trips for people.

Then on March 31st a 6.5 magnitude earthquake rattled. The Icon The Arrowhead met its demise and The Finger of Fate lost its tip.

On August 7th a 4.2 magnitude earthquake sent the Spire of Baron to its demise.  Linda & I were at the cabin when the quake occurred.  It was a rumble.

Named Old Smoothie, this Icon is no more. Baron Spire was first solved by Fred Beckey, Jack Schwabland and Pete Schoening in 1949.

So Idaho has lost 3 Iconic Class VI climbs to Mother Nature.

The irony for me? I found out about the collapse right after printing up a 72″ wide version of The View From Veritas for a customer of MESH Art.  The Baron Spire is to the Left.

A group of climbers were returning to Lower Baron Lake after surveying the area for a planned climb of The Baron Spire when it fell into Baron Creek.  Their video is [here].
